What is a dental emergency?
Oral injuries are painful and need to be treated by a dentist immediately.
Teeth that are knocked out, forced out of position (or knocked loose), or fractured need to be seen by a dentist within 30 minutes. Getting immediate assistance can be the difference between saving and losing your tooth.
If your tooth is knocked out, grasp it by the crown.
Touching the root could cause cellular damage and prevent it from reattaching to your bone. It is important to keep the root moist. Ideally, you should gently place the tooth back into the socket until you get to the dentist. If you are not able to hold it in your mouth, The American Dental association recommends placing the tooth in milk to transport it. The milk will act as a preservative until you can get to a professional. For broken or cracked teeth, until you can get to our office, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress.
For a lost filling or crown, place the filling or crown in a safe place and call us to make an appointment.
There are some over the counter options to decrease the tooth’s sensitivity, like clove oil, so be sure to ask your dentist what is appropriate for your situation.
Some dental emergencies can lead to permanent damage and possibly life-threatening infections.
When in doubt, call us. When you have a dental issue, the sooner you seek treatment from a professional, the better your outcome will be.
